Cleaning Out the S1

Updated on Feb 24, 2025

Cleaning the S1 Gearboxes with Compressed Air

Over time, small debris and filament dust can accumulate inside the gearbox, leading to gear slipping, or filament grinding.

Instructions

1. Get a can of compressed air (or equivalent).

2. Blow air into the small openings of the gearbox, aiming directly at the center gear.

3. Repeat for both gearboxes to ensure any debris is cleared.

Cleaning the Filament Junction

When the filament junction fills with dust it can block moving parts. This may cause the S1 to fail to switch filaments, strange logic errors, and incorrect filament state lights.

Instructions

1. Remove all Bowden tubes from the filament junction.

  • Press down on the blue ring and pull out the tube.

2. Using canned air blow, small bursts into each hole.

3. Reinstall the Bowden tube

  • Insert the tube back into the fitting until fully seated.

Additional Recommendations

  • Check gearbox performance regularly – If filament grinding occurs, inspect for debris inside the gearbox.
  • Use high-quality Bowden tubing – Lower friction materials reduce wear over time.
  • Replace components as needed – Gearboxes and filament junctions can wear out over time. Inexpensive replacement parts can be found here.
