Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to some of the most common questions we get:

Are there any deals for people who already bought the Beta Version?

Yes, as a thank you for trying out the cutters before anyone else, customers who purchased the beta version of the filament cutters can use the discount code BETA-UPGRADE to get 50% off when ordering the newest version of filament cutters.

  • Valid for one order per customer.
  • You can include multiple cutters in that order.
  • Use the same email address you used for that original order.
  • Live starting launch day (Tuesday, July 15th) and will be valid for one week only (unitl July 22nd @ 10AM EST).

What is the differece between the new version and the Beta version?

We’ve made several key improvements based on feedback from beta users and testing in real-world print farm setups:

  • Two detent sensitivity options

You can now choose between a firmer or softer detent, making it easier to tune the cutter for your specific system and reduce miscuts across a wider range of setups.

  • Spring-assisted cutting mechanism

The new cutter uses a spring-loaded blade to ensure a clean cut every time. This helps prevent situations where a failed cut leads to filament grinding or extruder skipping.

  • More compact design

We reduced the overall size of the unit, making it easier to install in tight spaces — including more AMS systems, dryboxes, and 3D printers.

Can the Filament Cutters be used with other AMS's/MMU's/3D Printers?

Yes — you can adapt it to other printers or AMS-style systems using a custom mount. You can even design your own using our design guide here.

Do the cutters work with the Bambu AMS?

We’re actively designing and testing a dedicated mount to make the cutters compatible with the AMS. Once testing is complete, we’ll release an official AMS-compatible mounting solution.

If you’d rather not wait, you’re welcome to try creating your own using our Custom Mount Design Guide, which includes example CAD files and mounting tips.

We’ll share updates as soon as the official AMS mount is ready.

Can I design my own mount for it?

Yes! We provide a full Custom Mount Design Guide with CAD files and best practices to help you build your own mount fro any setup.

How does the cutter know when to cut?

It’s purely mechanical. When a bend or obstructed filament end hits the inlet of the cutter tube, the tension causes it to get sliced off. No sensors, no electronics.

Will it cut tangled filament?

Yes — if a tangle creates enough resistance as it feeds in, the cutter will slice off the jammed section before it can reach the S1. It’s designed to stop reloads from failing due to tight coils or crossed lines near the spool end.

What kinds of obstructions will the cutter remove?

The cutter is designed to automatically cut off bent filament ends, taped ends, glue residue, tangled sections, and any other deformities that would jam the S1 inlet. If the obstruction creates enough resistance when entering the tube, it gets cut before it can cause a failure.

Do I need this to use the S1?

No — the S1 works without it. But if you’ve ever had reloads fail due to bent, taped, or tangled filament ends, this cutter will prevent those failures automatically.

Is the cutter compatible with 2.85mm filament?

No. The cutter is designed specifically for 1.75mm filament and is not compatible with 2.85mm systems.

What happens if I use the cutter without a reloader/AMS (directly before my 3D printer extruder)?

When the cutter detects a bent, tangled, or obstructed filament end, it will automatically cut it. After that, the printer will run out of filament and trigger a filament runout pause (as long as your printer has a runout sensor).

This gives you a chance to:

  • Untangle the filament or load a new spool

  • Resume the print manually without damage

Without the cutter, those same tangles or obstructions usually cause the extruder to grind or skip, which often leads to an unrecoverable failed print.

In short: even without a reloader, the cutter gives you a second chance instead of a ruined print.
